Diesel Particulate Filter
Cutaway Model

Item No.: 80872

The particle filter consists of a honeycomb-shaped ceramic body (silicon carbide). It is divided into a large number of small channels arranged in parallel, which are arranged alternately.

The following gases are contained in the exhaust gas: Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, sulphur dioxide. Furthermore soot particles and an additive. The additive, which is added to the fuel in fine traces, lowers the ignition temperature of the carbon from 650 to 500 degrees.

Demonstration:

  • The ceramic body, surrounded by fiber and steel wool, lies in a metal casing
  • The alternately closed and open channels can be recognized by the cut open part as well as the front and front side
  • Gas particles can escape through the pores of the side walls into the adjacent tubes, while soot and additive, due to their size, remain in the middle tube
  • Gas particles can escape backwards into the exhaust pipe
  • After approx. 500 to 700 kilometres of driving, regeneration takes place (the soot is burnt off)
  • Using pressure sensors before and after the filter and the exhaust gas temperature, it is calculated when regeneration is necessary. Now the filter is empty again.
